2 Characteristics of People with Good Work Ethic
Characteristic 1: How Quickly Do You Give Up?
If you’re an analyst who does a lot of project work or support work, a big chunk of your time is dedicated to resolving issues that pop up whether they’re foreseen or unforeseen, whether they’re on the business side or whether they’re technical issues.
You have to have the skill of being able to resolve issues as they pop up. Your ability to see these issues through to their end is part of what determines whether you have a good work ethic or not.
So, somebody who might not have as good of a work ethic might try to resolve a problem and they might put some effort into it but eventually usually very quickly will run into the point where they just say to themselves:
- ‘you know what I can’t solve this problem, I have to escalate’, or
- ‘I can’t solve this problem I’m going to try to give it to somebody else to try to solve it’.
Characteristic 2: Reliability
The reliability of the answers that they give to questions or the reliability of the statements that they make.
Some people in your organization are going to have the reputation of, for lack of a better word, giving flakey answers. And these are answers typically that are not very well thought through.
And that is a very dangerous territory for you to get yourself into if you want to develop a good work ethic because the role as an analyst and the work that you produce as an analyst has huge downstream impacts on the rest of the project.
- Ex. If you get one small thing wrong in a specification that you produce or if you misunderstand a certain requirement. The impact of something like that as it goes downstream in the project magnifies exponentially.
The things that you say and the answers that you give is a very clear characteristic of a person who has a certain level of work ethic.
If you have people in your organization that are giving you answers that you know you can’t rely on or you have to do a lot of additional work to try to validate and rectify something, that is usually a signal of low work ethic in yourself.
You have to make sure that you put in the time and the effort and you pick up the knowledge that you need to be able to answer questions reliably.
The Pitfall of Having A Good Work Ethic
What can tend to happen with people who work very hard is that they can lose sight of the bigger picture.
- People can tend to actually focus a lot more on the work than on the results themselves.
And what happens is that they’ll
- Work very hard
- Have a very good work ethic
- Never give up.
- They try to provide solid answers
But a lot of times the work that they’re doing isn’t producing the results which are needed
When somebody already has a good work ethic, they have to put in extra effort to make sure the work they’re doing is producing the results that are expected by the employer, client or whoever has the expectations out of the work that you’re trying to complete based on a certain schedule.
